Finally: Jonathan Accepts National Confab

It seems like President Jonathan has finally bowed to public pressure. In his address to mark the nation's 53rd anniversary, the president announced that a committee on the national confab was being set up. The advisory committee is to establish modalities for the exercise to resolve issues that currently threaten the unity and progess of the country.

Jonathan said that the committee, which would have Dr. Femi Okurounmu as its Chairperson and Dr. Akilu Sani Indabawa as Secretary, would complete its assignment within one month. The two top officials of the committee are not new to Nigerian politics.

Nigerians have began to react to the announcement.

Mr Muda Yussuf, Director General, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), said it was a good development. “It will give Nigerians the opportunity to talk and this is another expression of the fact that our democracy is getting stronger. “Freedom to discuss how we live together is a good development, but what is more important for our country at this time is good leadership,” Yusuf said.
